No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national projects. They were built at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
